Artist: Yana Movchan

Biography:
Yanina (Yana) Movchan was born in Kiev in 1971. She lives in Halifax, Canada, with her husband and two young sons. Yana trained at the Ukrainian Art Academy. Her master’s thesis project won the Golden Fund Prize, the Academy’s highest art award. Her work has featured in solo and group exhibitions in the Ukraine, Prague, London and Canada.

Artist Statement:
Yana's mastery of the technique and structure of Renaissance painting combines with the instinctive symbolism of magical realism. Her work is formal, playful, timeless, and joyous, almost like a dream.

Background Information:
"Yana Movachan's whimsical still lifes draw from the genre's rich history, while also reflecting the artist's unique sensibility. Movchan's paintings suggest that life can never truly be still. Movchan's paintings suggest that life can never truly be still."

This connects to the theme because it shows the beauty of the birds and flowers of nature. I chose this piece because Yana Movachan really captures the elegance of the flower arrangement on the table. She uses a great color scheme.
