Biography:
Lucy Martin was born in Wyoming and grew up in Boulder, Colorado, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. From early childhood she felt that her connection to the nature around her was the heart of her world. At a young age she developed the habit of observation, the appreciation of small things, and an intense love for the strange and beautiful in nature.
Artist Statement:
She celebrates In her
art the way that fungi are helpful in the process and embody to the cycle of
life. She hopes that as an artist she can awaken the mystery, strangeness and
beauty of our natural world.
Background Statement:
“Her show, “Secrets of the Forest: Portraits of Wild Mushrooms” was presented at the Helen Crocker Russell Library in Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco in 2012. Her work has been purchased for the Permanent Collection of the Special Collections and Archives Department at McHenry Library of UC Santa Cruz.”-ASBA
This piece connects to theme because Lucy Martin uses an eerie night that shows a bright tiger salamander coming out of its hole with a bright moonlight eliminating it from behind the trees. I chose this piece because she creates a cool eerie look that captivated my interest.
